5 Uses of Matcha

Posted by Madeline Eliz on

Matcha is making a comeback. Made from shaded Japanese tea leaves containing higher chlorophyll levels and later grounded into a fine powder, this longstanding ingredient ranks amongst the highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) foods. This means its antioxidants put up an excellent fight against free radicals and neutralise their harmful effects. Bursting with an incredible 20 times more antioxidants than pomegranates or blueberries and 60 times that of spinach, it’s no wonder the health community swears by it.

“We see a slow but increasing demand for beauty products made with superfoods and matcha is one of those ingredients that has amazing health benefits. The catechins found in the leaves are associated with metabolism-boosting, anticarcinogenic, healing and calming properties,” adds Dr Low Chai Ling of SW1 Clinic. For green tea lovers this gives us all the more reason to go matcha crazy.

#1 Rock with Matcha

Feel the difference in your mood and perhaps waistline when you start your day with this super green tea. All you need is just 3 seconds max of preparation - add matcha powder to water, stir and drink - to reap a mountain of benefits. Depending on your generosity with the powder, you could make usucha, a lighter brew or koicha, a rich and thick drink. Add spice to life and mix it with smoothie or food.

#2 Radiate Matcha

They say put your best foot forward, we say put your best face forward. Get your daily dose of ultra refreshing, anti-aging wellness with H2O+ Aquadefense Shielding Matcha Facial Essence ($35.70). A dual-action mist with matcha, rice bran extracts and vitamin E, it refreshes and protects skin. Spritz before or after makeup to moisturise and soften skin.

#3 Smell like Matcha

Matcha fans know what we’re saying when we say we get addicted to the heavenly fragrance. It’s soothing and invigorating at the same time! Put on a subtle perfume with Thymes Jade Matcha Body Wash ($21) and show your love. This jade body wash packed with ginseng and shiso leaf extracts gently cleanses while the hydrating glycerin regulates and calms. With reviews like “a truly refreshing gift for the body”, “my daily shower will never be the same” and our own “we want to soak in it”, this body gel is a buy for us.

#4 Go to Spa with Matcha

A proper bodycare regime goes a long way and that starts or ends with exfoliating dead skin cells. Hardy & Co Matcha Latte Skin Polish ($30) offers a well-deserved home spa experience. Enriched with matcha to purify skin and refine pores, pure olive squalane to regulate oil production and jojoba beads to lightly rid dead cells, we can see why it’s a store bestseller! We interview Jan E Wilkinson, a beauty editor, 33, who is on her third tub.

Review of Hardy & Co Matcha Latte Skin Polish

When I was introduced to this scrub by a friend, I didn’t think much of it as the packaging is well...simple. While there are brands which spend on their packaging, I’m comforted knowing the money I’ve spent goes elsewhere instead of the aesthetics. I LOVE matcha so when it greeted me with that familiar, loving scent, I’m half sold. It’s a gentle exfoliator ideal for my sensitive and dry skin. It is also lightweight, not extremely oily at all. You can see that there's a light shine on my skin in the After picture below.

After use, I’m really pleased with how my skin feels nourished, refreshed and looks more radiant. One tub can last me anywhere between 3-4 months and at this reasonable price, there’s really nothing to pick on!

#5 Fight Damaged Hair with Matcha

Split ends, dull hair, is that enough to catch your attention? More often than not, our crowning glory is neglected and sometimes even abused with hair colouring, straightening and virtually non-existent haircare. Stop hair thinning and balding in their tracks with a remedy plain in sight. Embrace the power of green tea in haircare products; an inhibitor of Dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that is a main culprit to hair loss. Theorie Green Tea Hair Mask ($22) applied directly to the scalp and hair helps stimulates hair growth and slows hair loss for stronger and healthier hair.
